And, as a consequence, to inspire all those involved to think about offsetting the carbon footprint of their respective projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Well, guess what?<\/span><\/p>\n We\u2019re thrilled to announce that vessel first mooted in late spring has not only been spotted, but it\u2019s arrived in port crammed with a cargo of shiny, super-precise carbon data.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n (Pauses for dramatic effect.)<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n That\u2019s right, today we\u2019re releasing our first version of our <\/span>Carbon Market Cap<\/b><\/a>. (It\u2019s okay to feel a little bit excited.) Below you\u2019ll see a screenshot of the tracker. Hit the link above and you can leap right in and search, scan, survey and say \u201cNo way\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Now, don\u2019t fret unduly. On first inspection, the numbers seem pretty wild, but that shouldn\u2019t stop you working with your favourite project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n After all, we\u2019ve created this tracker to illustrate, illuminate and, like we said previously, inspire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We want to show you how it\u2019s perfectly possible to offset your ongoing crypto carbon footprint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n You should also be aware, this tool works in tandem with our recently released. Armed with knowledge, you can go step out and heal the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n So let\u2019s take one particular day: Tuesday 3rd August, 2021. What we saw is that the carbon debt on that day stood at something like $200 million. However, the shared market cap – the dollar value – of all projects listed exceeded $200 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Worth a wow? We think so.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In other words, the market cap of this sample – in relation to the emissions created – has a 1000:1 ratio. This in itself demonstrates the value of projects and the Ethereum ecosystem vastly outweighs the environmental impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Think of it this way: for every $100 spent transacting on Ethereum projects, around 10 cents needs to be deployed to offset the carbon emissions. When gas prices are high on the network, this ratio compresses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What does this all mean? Essentially the numbers offer a quantifiable benchmark of DOVU\u2019s vision that the world can afford to offset every single crypto transaction. It\u2019s possible. It can happen. These numbers say so.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Surprisingly, the current number-one slot on the list belongs to <\/span>Tether<\/span><\/a> (USDT), with a total carbon debt of 1.3 megatonnes of Co2e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This is a mind-bogglingly huge amount. One vital factor to keep in mind is that there are over 3.3 million Tether holders. Maybe you have some in your crypto wallet? We certainly do. Time to roll out some speed maths…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If we divide the total debt by the number of holders, we establish the carbon debt for each individual holder. In this case, we can calculate the carbon and dollar cost as an average for all, based on the <\/span>EU ETS carbon price<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n 1,323,970,392 divided by\u00a0 3,365,267 = 393.4\u00a0 kg CO2e.<\/b><\/p>\n Which equates to $25.18.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Twenty-five dollars (and eighteen cents) to offset the volume of carbon created doesn\u2019t seem too daunting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, one might suggest it shows how relatively easy and cost-effective it is to fix an issue that is often portrayed as an immutable problem. The reality is much more exciting than the myth. <\/span> Ultimately, placing this spotlight on carbon creation and the offsetting necessary serves as an open invitation for decentralised communities and decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs) to work together.
