How much crypto carbon are you creating?

As crypto has sashayed its way into the cultural zeitgeist over the last couple of years, it’s not especially easy to grasp, in concrete terms, what our own individual environmental contribution is. Imagine how useful it would be to understand your personal crypto debt.

We’re constantly told how Bitcoin or blockchain is bad in terms of energy usage being compared to countries and, by extension, the carbon emissions footprint.

Using binary and divisive language isn’t helpful; the topic is complicated and nuanced – causing misinformation and damage. There are thousands of different projects, many of which use systems that are carbon friendly, such as Hedera Hashgraph.

Correct framing of this problem is a challenge. Everything is opaque. Digging deeper risks losing a simplistic understanding of this new world.

At DOVU, we believe that before we provide our solution to the market, we should educate and inspire our community beyond understanding the problem we’re solving.
Drumroll, please…

Introducing the DOVU carbon calculator. Perhaps you picked up on it from a playful hint on our promotional video. ????

With this calculator, we’ve created a tool that helps anyone understand how many kilograms or tonnes (super users) of carbon they’ve contributed to in terms of a carbon debt.

While the blockchain industry is under constant scrutiny and slap-wristing about under-utilising renewable energy sources, and with alternative approaches to consensus like Proof of Stake becoming more prevalent, there’s an argument that these kinds of solutions aren’t required as blockchain technology will evolve and energy usage will continue to reduce.

Well, maybe… but we say a carbon debt is a debt nonetheless. Perhaps you won’t need to commit today, but someone down the road will.

So will you take responsibility? Will you commit? Give it a look. We dare you.

How about linking up your Metamask wallet into our Carbon Calculator app, and acquire some tangible insights into your footprint? You can also take positive action by acquiring DOV from either the Ethereum, Polygon or Binance networks.

If Bitcoin is a store of value, DOVU represents a store of carbon offset value that can be deployed toward proof of carbon.

Remember, this is merely stage one in our journey: raising awareness and educating.

Next, we’ll provide the tools for you, as a developer or tinkerer, to get started directly building your own experiments through our carbon pricing API.
